This conference aims to study, through social and cultural representations and practices, on the ambivalence between “adaptations” to winter (which presuppose the abnormality of the season) and the “uses” of winter (which define winter as a material for the creation of representations and artistic practices). We hypothesize that “winter” is first and foremost a socio-cultural phenomenon and that the representations that stem from it—both internal, from cold climate cultures, and external, from cultures of the rest of the world—create a vast and complex system of signs whose adequacy with reality and materiality does not always allow for behaviors, practices and policies that take into account all the components of this season.
